"Let me tell you 'bout my Jesus" (from My Jesus, linked below) is what they are singing on the way as they encounter others who are struggling with addiction, anger, abandonment, haunting memories, loss and grief, desperation, loneliness, and so much more. Jesus' compassion comes from seeing us as we are, not as we pretend to be, not just what we put out for others to see. When we begin to see others the way Jesus sees them, then we, too, can be compassionate and come along side them. 2 Corinthians 1:4 says that He "comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God."
This picture reminds me of Matthew 7:14 which tells us "narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it." Those along the side of the road have been lured and distracted by the things of this world --partying, watching tv, playing video games, etc. If we look carefully, we see people along the way every now and then stepping over to the road and "peeking in" to see where we're all going, wondering why we are persevering and sensing the peace that we have and wondering how to join in. We need to be careful not to miss these opportunities to stop and care for them, to see them, to listen to them, and to carefully discern when they are ready to hear our stories, to "let us tell them bout our Jesus." this is how we live, this is our purpose, this is how we glorify god and give meaning to our lives and live out our desire to hear "well done, good and faithful servant!" (Matthew 25:21) when we arrive at the finish line. We enjoy the fellowship of those with us on the path and seek to bring others along until that glorious day when we see Jesus face to face
